Smilla to specjalistka od lodu - jego kształtu, od unikalnych konstrukcji, które tworzy. Nie zna się na niczym innym. Jest też obcą w obcym kraju - Grenlandką, która przeprowadziła się do Danii. Wyalienowana w niechętnym jej społeczeństwie, coraz bardziej zamyka się w sobie. Do dnia, w którym poznaje Esajasa - współplemieńca, który staje się jej namiastką ojczyzny.
Bliska więź tych dwojga zostaje brutalnie zerwana w dniu, w którym młody Grenlandczyk traci życie, spadając z dachu. Smilla, która się nim opiekowała, odmawia prawdy oficjalnej wersji śmierci chłopca - nie wierzy, że był to zwykły wypadek. Wie bowiem, że Esajas cierpiał na lęk wysokości i sam nie udałby się na dach. Podejrzewa morderstwo i podejmuje własne śledztwo.
Szybko dochodzi do wniosku, że jest na właściwym tropie, a jej niezwykłe zdolności "czytania" śniegu okażą się kluczowe w śledztwie.
Smilla w labiryntach śniegu to niezwykły kryminał, dla którego morderstwo i następujące po niej śledztwo stanowi pretekst dla zdecydowanie istotniejszej kwestii alienacji i asymilacji we współczesnym zachodnim świecie ludzi pochodzących z innych, tradycyjnych kultur. To powieść równie skomplikowana i piękna w konstrukcji, co płatek śniegu.
